Chapter 10

Chaos Lives In Everything

The town of Valley View was lively on this sunny afternoon. A large crowd of spectators clapped, sounding like rapid gunfire. Following the brief round of applause, they proceeded to leave, in an unorganized fashion, from the event they’d been attending, their boots kicking up columns of dust. Small groups stopped and gathered in tight circles, chatting about what they had seen.

“Like magic!”

“Cures sores!”

“Said it would bring my estranged wife back home!”

Cole caught bits and pieces of the conversations as he pushed through the steady stream of people strolling in the opposite direction. Angus nipped at his heels, taking advantage of the cleared path and looking like a child following his father. Emma kept the duster pulled tight over her head and tucked her arms inside, which drew the bemused glances of passersby. Then they saw what had drawn such a crowd.

A covered wagon stood before them, complete with two horses in front. Four tables were set up beside the wagon, littered with various sizes of tonic-filled glass bottles and beakers full of colorful liquids. A man, dressed in black garb—complete with a cape—busied himself packing the bottles into a crate.

Once the man turned around, his identity came as no surprise. “You are faster than I anticipated,” Chadwick Midnight chuckled. “I was just packing to travel to Woodbury.”

“Getting from place to place is easier when you have a friend in the Nex—”

“What’s in the bottles?” Cole interjected before Angus could give away vital information. “It’s not poison, is it? You strike me as the type who would enjoy poisoning a crowd.” He watched Chadwick’s face for any visible signs that he’d understood what Angus had started to say.

Still looking at Angus, Chadwick said, “Ah, I see. Some mysteries are often easily solved. It seems my reputation has traveled far outside the reaches of this town.”

Damn, Cole thought. He must’ve understood. Now he knows we were at the Nexus with Kelly.

Turning his attention to Cole, Chadwick continued packing his crate. “The bottom feeders in this town would be so lucky as to ingest poison. I don’t find them to be worth the trouble. What I have here is merely magical hair regrowth and anti-aging serum. If you’d be interested in trying some, I will give you a free sampling. It might help to keep that blonde hair of yours thick for years to—”

“Not interested.” Cole exhaled hard through his nose, feeling both annoyed by Chadwick’s dawdling and nervous about how the magician might react knowing they had been at the Nexus with Kelly. He knew he needed to approach the situation with great caution, but his inability to stop his mouth from constantly running made such things harder than necessary.

“Can you cure me, or not?” the cloaked Emma barked, stepping in for Cole’s pause. “We brought the vampire blood.” She motioned for Angus to come over, who gripped the mug of red liquid tightly between his small hands.

“Well certainly, Ms.” Chadwick raised a single finger. “Excuse my rudeness, but I’d like to sample the blood for myself, to make sure it isn’t tainted.
